List of Sub Counties in Siaya County

This is a list of all sub counties in Siaya County.

Siaya County is situated in the former Nyanza Province of western Kenya. Bordering Busia County to the north, and Kakamega and Vihiga Counties to the northeast and Kisumu County to the southeast, Siaya shares a water border with Homa Bay County to the south.

Its total area is 2,496.1 km2 and lies between the latitudes 0° 26′ to 0° 18′ north, and longitudes 33° 58′ east and 34° 33′ west. Since the Constitution of 2010, the county has been divided into six districts, with Siaya as its capital and Bondo as the largest town.

According to WikipediaSub-counties are the decentralised units through which county governments of Kenya will provide functions and services. Except for the parts which fall under urban areas, sub-counties will coincide with the constituencies created under article 89 of the Constitution of Kenya.  Sub-counties will be headed by a sub-county administrator, appointed by a County Public Service Board.

Each listed sub-county in Siaya County has its own administrative center and is governed by an elected sub-county administrator. The sub-counties are further divided into wards, which are the smallest administrative units in Kenya.

Alego Usonga Sub-County

Alego Usonga is the largest sub-county in Siaya County, covering an area of 473.3 square kilometers. The sub-county has a population of over 200,000 people and is home to several market centers, including Usonga, Sidindi, and Siaya town. Agriculture is the main economic activity in Alego Usonga, with maize, beans, and groundnuts being the main crops grown in the area.

Bondo Sub-County

Bondo Sub-County covers an area of 163.6 square kilometers and has a population of over 120,000 people. The sub-county is known for its rich cultural heritage, including the famous Bondo circumcision ceremony, which is a rite of passage for girls in the region. Bondo town, the administrative center of the sub-county, is also home to several schools, including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.

Gem Sub-County

Gem Sub-County covers an area of 306.5 square kilometers and has a population of over 150,000 people. The sub-county is known for its fertile soil and is a major producer of sugarcane, maize, and beans. Gem is also home to several market centers, including Yala and Siaya town.

Rarieda Sub-County

Rarieda Sub-County covers an area of 358.1 square kilometers and has a population of over 170,000 people. The sub-county is known for its scenic beauty, with several hills and valleys dotting the landscape. Fishing is a major economic activity in Rarieda, with Lake Victoria providing a source of livelihood for many residents.

Ugenya Sub-County

It is situated in the northeastern part of the county and covers an area of approximately 157 square kilometers. Ugenya is home to a population of around 100,000 people, who mainly engage in agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trading.

The sub-county is served by a number of primary and secondary schools, health facilities, and other amenities such as markets, police stations, and administrative offices. Notable attractions in Ugenya include the Yala Swamp, which is a wetland ecosystem that supports a variety of flora and fauna, and the historic Rarieda Hills, which offer scenic views of the surrounding landscapey.

Ugunja Sub-County

Ugunja Sub-County covers an area of 274.6 square kilometers and has a population of over 140,000 people. The sub-county is known for its rich history, with several historical sites, including the Ugenya rock paintings, located in the area. Agriculture is the main economic activity in Ugunja, with maize, beans, and groundnuts being the main crops grown in the area.
